Facilities Planning and Management at Iowa State University is seeking to hire a Civil Engineer. The position responsibilities include providing engineering services for utility distribution facilities consisting of domestic water, sanitary sewer, and storm sewer systems. Duties will include analyzing and troubleshooting utility systems and equipment; planning and managing utility projects; and coordinating contractors and design consultants. There will be opportunities for cross training to work with steam, chilled water, and natural gas.

In addition, this position will be responsible for documenting distribution systems and design standards and providing support of mechanical distribution personnel.

The successful candidate will possess strong communication skills; strong organizational and analytical skills; and the ability to organize and coordinate work within and between projects. They must have the ability to understand complex utility systems and equipment.

This position will be filled at the Engineer III or IV level.

The Engineer III position has minimum required qualifications of Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of related experience and is a PS811 pay level.

The Engineer IV position has minimum required qualifications of Bachelor’s degree and 8 years of related experience and is a PS812 pay level. A State of Iowa Professional Engineering license is preferred for the Engineer IV position.

Example of Duties
  • Completes complex engineering projects.
  • Performs project engineering work from design to implementation in accordance with the University’s policies.
  • Serves as a consultant to others as assigned, providing technical information and engineering recommendations that assist with various projects and training purposes.
  • May guide and train less experienced engineers.
While this position is based on the Ames campus, it requires some off-campus travel to visit all areas with utility piping. Candidate must be able to be approved to drive an ISU owned vehicle.

Level Guidelines
  • Senior-level position possessing high-level professional and/or technical skills working independently under minimal supervision to support ISU’s mission and department or work unit goals
  • Applies senior-level professional knowledge and expertise to work requiring greater latitude
  • Solves moderately complex problems and regularly exercises judgment to determine appropriate action
  • Regularly exercises judgment to resolve problems and determine appropriate action on a broad set of issue and problems. May provide recommendations regarding problems/issues outside the bounds of defined procedures and practices
  • Responds to complicated inquiries, provides training, and provides direction to lower-level staff
  • May provide supervision for one to two other staff (i.e., leads a small work team)
  • May lead projects for which well-defined practices and procedures may not exist
  • Provides guidance to students
